The Transalpina is the highest, oldest (2000 years old) and the most beautiful road across the Carpathians. At the highest point, the road has a 2145 meters altitude. It crosses the Parang mountains from north to south and it is the main connecting road between Novaci (Gorj county) and Sibiu (Alba county). The road passes the mountains Papusa (2136m), Iezer (2157m) and Urdele (2228m). In the transalpine zone, there are many glacial lakes, the Oltez Gorge (which is spectacular despite the small size of 1.5 km), the Polovraci Cave with about 9000m underground cave passages and the Polovraci Monastery, which is over 500 years old.
