If we can look forward to something at Christmas time, then definitely to our Christmas markets. With warm mulled wine, sweet treats and a colourful selection of all kinds of handmade things, they lure us out of the house every year anew – despite bad weather. A particularly beautiful example of a Christmas market can be found in Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The Cluj-Napoca Christmas Market is one of the 24 most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe.

In 2018 it even won the prize as the European Best Christmas Market, which is awarded annually by the European Best Destination Organisation.

The Cluj-Napoca Christmas Market

You can visit Romania’s most beautiful Christmas market between 22 November and 31 December. Especially due to its various child-friendly play possibilities and a large skating rink, it is a place for the whole family. But also adults definitely get their money’s worth on the traditionally decorated market area around the Saint Michael church. The beautifully decorated booth houses spread the aromas of hot chocolate and cooked wine from afar.  The Santa Claus tram, the star singers and their concert evenings, as well as the splendid Christmas lighting are only some of the numerous attractions of the Cluj-Napoca Christmas market.

New action for 2019

This year – 2019 – there will be some new exciting elements in addition to the well-known highlights. One example is the Căsuței Moșului program, which, in addition to traditional workshops and meetings for the whole family, for the first time also features an escape room for visitors. In the Escape Room, visitors must try to solve an exciting Christmas puzzle within 30 minutes and free themselves from the room – as the name suggests.

Doing good thins

But the Cluj-Napoca market will not miss out on the good cause either this year; donations will be collected for two social projects of the organisation BeardBrothers. The first project, called “Mobile Beard”, is dedicated to the needs of disabled people in public transport, while the other aims to introduce a so-called social ambulance, which also provides medical care to people in rural regions of Romania.

Worth a visit!

Artistically, the Cluj-Napoca Christmas Market is not only a place to marvel at things on stage, but also on the street. This year, a number of well-known Romanian artists will be exhibiting their works accessible to all visitors. “We want to create an open scene.” says for example the organizer Alexandra Crăciun, which understands its Weihnachtsmarkt above all as place of the Besinnlichkeit, creativity and exchange.
